3 Winter Warmers We Wouldn't Be Without

When the nights are drawing in a hot drink can be a mood-saver and much needed pick-me-up. With this in mind we've put together our top 3 winter warmer recipes - chilli hot chocolate, matcha green tea latte and Korean yuzu tea.

1) Chilli Hot Chocolate

There's nothing we dislike more than weak, powdered hot chocolate which is why our chilli hot chocolate recipe uses real 54% dark chocolate couverture. A pinch of habanero chilli powder really does make a difference to the warming properties of a good hot chocolate and will leave you feeling warm, toasty and slightly spicy inside! Cinnamon brings a lovely, rounded spice flavour and a hint of Mexico.

Bring 250ml of whole milk and 40ml water to the boil with 1/2 a cinnamon stick. Remove the cinnamon stick and take the pan off the heat. Whisk in 60g dark chocolate couverture (54%) and a small pinch of habanero chilli powder. You can always add more so begin cautiously and taste as you go. Serves 2.

2) Matcha Green Tea Latte

There are people who live by matcha green tea lattes... and we can see why! Not only is a matcha latte a great winter warmer it also leaves you feeling detoxified and refreshed.

Add 1 teaspoon of matcha green tea powder to a cup. Pour over 150ml hot milk, stirring well. Sweeten to taste with 2-3 teaspoons of agave syrup. Use a milk frother to froth 50ml more milk and gently pour over the surface of the latte. Dust the top of the frothed milk with a little matcha powder. Serves 1.

3) Korean Yuzu Tea

Forget lemon and honey, Korean yuzu tea is the perfect soothing winter warmer. Indeed, in Korea the yuzu fruit is thought to carry medicinal properties and Korean yuzu tea is often consumed to relieve the symptoms of colds and flus.

Korean yuzu tea comes in the form of a sweet but tart marmalade, made from yuzu and honey. This thick yuzu syrup is made with both the flesh and peel of the yuzu fruit. We’ve found that once you finish a cup of Korean yuzu tea eating the pieces of tangy yuzu peel at the bottom becomes almost as enjoyable as the tea itself!

Add 1-2 teaspoons of Korean yuzu tea to a cup of hot water and stir well. You can also add a sprig of rosemary to the hot water to introduce heady, earthy notes.
