Unlike the sickly-sweet marzipan we’re more familiar with in the UK, Carstens marzipan is delicately nutty and aromatic. It’s made with a higher ratio of ground almonds to sugar than we’re used to, which gives Carstens marzipan a lighter texture and its coveted flavour.

Carstens marzipan is made in Lübeck, a city to the north east of Hamburg. The Carstens Lübecker Marzipan Company was founded in 1865, and their marzipan was so sought-after that Carstens were named the imperial supplier of marzipan to the court of Emperor Wilhelm I. Carstens spent the next 100 years perfecting their craft. Then, in 1996, Carstens Lübecker marzipan gained protected designation of origin (PDO) status.
