Villa Massa Limoncello, 500ml

Description

Villa Massa limoncello is a 'real' limoncello of Sorrento, produced using lemons grown only in the towns of the Sorrentine Peninsular, and on the Island of Capri, in Southern Italy. The lemons have been grown in the area for centuries. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate of the Sorrento-Amalfi coast the peel grows thick and fragrant, and is rich in the essential oils that give the Villa Masa limoncello its unique flavour.

What is limoncello?

Limoncello is a sweet, aromatic lemon liqueur that’s mainly produced in the Campania region of Southern Italy. In the north of Italy, it is also known as limoncino.

To be a ‘real’ limoncello, only lemons from the Sorrentine or Amalfi coast should be used. From Sorrento, we get Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also called Sorrento or Sfusato lemons. Along the Amalfi coast grow Limone Costa d’Amalfi, also known as Sfusato Amalfitano. The lemons from both Sorrento and Amalfi have gained IGP status – or Protected Geographical Indication – marking them as unique to the Campania region.

The lemons are peeled and the pith removed. The peel is steeped in rectified spirit – a very high ABV alcohol obtained through repeated distillation – until the essential oils and natural lemon colour are released. The lemon peel is strained and the alcohol is expertly blended with simple sugar syrup to make the finished limoncello.

How should I drink limoncello?

Limoncello is best enjoyed as cold as possible. In Campania, it’s served straight as a digestif after dinner. Keep your Villa Masa limoncello in the freezer – it won’t freeze solid, but will be thick, syrupy and fantastically refreshing on a hot summer’s day.

Villa Massa limoncello is also a great aperitif mixed with tonic water or champagne. And you’re not restricted to drinking it. Try Villa Masa limoncello with desserts, too. Drizzle it over ice cream or lemon sorbet, fruit salads, or even use as an ingredient in an indulgent lemon cheesecake or tart.
