Star Anise, 50g

Description

Star anise, also known as star aniseed or Chinese star anise, is the dried fruit of the Illicium verum plant known for its warm liquorice, sweet aniseed flavours. Star anise is most often used in Chinese and Indian cooking – frequently used to make Chinese five spice powder, or Indian garam masala.

As its name implies, star anise is star-shaped, with the eight fronds of the star containing small, shiny seeds. The spice isn’t eaten, but used to infuse dishes – so using a whole star anise makes it easier to detect and remove before serving. As well as spice blends, star anise is often used in meat marinades or glazes as well as with poached pears, stewed plums, and mulled wine.
