Leone has been making chocolate and pastilles since 1857, starting in a small town near Alba before moving to Turin. The brand still stamps its "L" on everything, a habit that goes back to 1900. These pralines carry that same attention - the pistachio and hazelnut creams are made with real paste.

Serve them after dinner with coffee, or keep the tin on the counter and let people help themselves through December. Once they're finished, wash out the tin and use it for buttons, string, or whatever else needs a good home. It's sturdy enough to last years past the chocolate.

Meet the maker: Leone

Leone has been making Italian sweets since 1857, when Luigi Leone began offering little sugar pastilles to guests at his family's tavern in northern Italy. Flavoured with mint, cinnamon and cloves, they soon became so popular that Luigi moved to Turin and opened his own confectionery business.

Before long, Leone was supplying sweets to the Italian royal family. More than 160 years later, its famous pastel-coloured pastilles are still made using traditional bronze moulds, alongside chocolates, fruit jellies and other sweet treats. We love Leone for its wonderful history, playful packaging and devotion to old-fashioned sweet making.
